The High Tatras in Slovakia has been named the first-class destination in Europe this summer.

It was crowned Lonely Planet’s Best in Europe list for 2019, highlighting the most interesting locations to visit.

Described by the guide ebook writer as a “legendary panorama of crooked peaks and plunging waterfalls” wherein brown bears nonetheless thrive, the High Tatras mountain variety also has excellent hiking terrain, boating (or ice skating, depending on the time of year) on the glacial Štrbské Pleso lake, and traditional hospitality in high-altitude mountain huts known as chatty.

At number two is the Spanish capital of Madrid, often passed over by tourists in favor of Barcelona, and in the third area is the Arctic Coast Way in Iceland.

The Shetland Islands, ranked 6th in Scotland, is the handiest UK vacation spot to make the 10-strong listing. Though difficult to attain, the archipelago is commended for its “exquisite coastal trails, depraved flora, and fauna looking and fabled fish and chip shops.”
